Just found out that a guy in Mississippi is trying to recruit witches and who knows who else in a war against the gods! We have to stop him!

Dy Says: I’m only putting this up because I find it interesting that Gardner would be clear that if you were going to harm someone to stop a greater harm being caused by them, it was okay, as long as you atoned for the wrong, or at least “abated” it. Just some thoughts for everyone.

I recommended this book earlier to lughne, but I wanted to do more of a full review of it. This book is fantastic. The first edition was first published in 2001, which was a few years before I started to get interested in paganism, and I wish that I had been lucky enough to find this the first time around.

The Good
On the spiritual level, Penczak resonated with me deeply. I’ve lived in a city my whole life, and it’s true that most paganism resources are heavily focused on nature and working in a natural environment, which just isn’t possible sometimes. But more than just setting up sacred space in an urban environment, Penczak talks about the sacred which already exists in the city. And that jives so easily with what I’ve experienced myself, walking the streets of the city. Toronto does have a spirit, a self, and it’s one that I believe I’ve touched without realising it. I’m excited to explore that relationship more deeply now.

On a practical note, the exercises that crop up throughout the book are really good. They start out very simple with meditation and work up through more complex energy-manipulation. I’m one of those people who have always struggled with meditation, but even I think these exercises will help me. He also provides tips on creating sacred space even at the office, on simple “spells” and meditations, how to find totemic animals in an urban environment, tons of good information.

He also talks about spirits of electronics and new deities being created from cultural icons - I think I follow a couple of people who work with “new” gods and pop culture pantheons who would find that interesting. My biggest takeaway was the image of a genderless Internet-god, a trickster-spider. I might be exploring that further as well.

The Bad
Honestly, there wasn’t much bad. The only things I had to complain about were my various recon twitches about That’s Not Celtic! and That’s Not Yours!. I know that it’s quite common in NeoPaganism, but I just can’t shake the uneasy feeling that using chakras out of context of an Indian religion is appropriation. But it’s so common that I don’t usually comment on it. A handful of similar issues: shamanism, totem animals, and devas. I won’t go on, but for people who go grrrrr at appropriation, just a heads-up. The advice in the book can be followed without having to pay attention to that, so it’s still worth a read.

The Ugly
Just - just skip the entire chapter on “Techno Temples”. While I’m sure it was helpful in 2001, now it reads like trying to teach your grandmother what e-mail is. Unless you have a cool grandmother who is technologically saavy. Which I don’t. I did have a pretty rad great-uncle who would send me emails in Latin.

First formal libation today, reading from the Orphic hymn to Eros. First lighting of the incense I chose for him as well - definitely stronger than the other types I use, the rose notes are a sharp floral even when burning. Libation offered is chilled milk with grated orange peel. It’ll be time to replace his candle/s soon - I’ll likely just buy new ones entirely, since I plan on turning the current candle cups into offering ware once they finish burning out.

I would have liked to put some new cuttings in today for him, but I basically spent all day outside doing yard work. Maybe during the week! I’m waiting for our peonies to bloom so I can bring a few in for him, it will look really beautiful.

“The Heart of my Enemies” Curse

So a while back AGoodPaganWife asked me about cursing and Kitchen Magic. In the video I did for her, I hadn’t ever considered a curse you could eat yourself and warned that when baking food meant for cursing, it’s generally not a bright idea to eat or consume any of the food yourself.

And then I got to thinking a few minutes ago while frying up some rosemary, mushrooms, and Turkey Liver in olive oil… About curses you could eat where the very act of eating it IS the curse.

And of course, I come up with one.

What you’ll need:

Animal Heart(s)

Olive Oil or butter (or whatever you prefer to cook it with)

Rosemary

A little Salt and Pepper

A pan to fry it in, and a stove… Obviously. Plus utensils to eat it with.

Most of my kitchen magic revolves around visualization. So for those of you who aren’t good with visualization… This may not be the best curse for you.

Hearts may or may not be hard to come by, but what I do know is that you’ll often find avian hearts the easiest to get a hold of. Whole turkeys usually have the hearts, livers, and neck left inside, you can buy pre-packaged chicken gizzard and heart blends, and sometimes whole chickens will also come with their hearts and livers stuffed inside as well. If you get in good with a local butcher, sometimes you’re also able to get a hold of them. It doesn’t matter the size of the heart, or what animal it comes from (just no humans, obviously), so long as it is a heart.

What to Do:

Defrost the heart(s) and prep everything for cooking;

Heat the oil and rosemary over low heat (it doesn’t take a whole lot and the lower the heat the better for right now);

Hold the raw heart in your hands and imagine or visualize the person you want to curse. Visualize that this is their heart that you hold in your hands. You hold their soul, their happiness, their love, and everything else the heart is associated with and stands for. It’s yours now;

When you are ready, place the heart in the pan and then go wash that animal gunk off your hands;

Cook the heart(s) until fully cooked*, imagining that you are removing their power, love, happiness, etc, from them and burning it up so they can no longer hold or have it. Also visualize the rosemary cleansing the negativity from the heart(s), these emotions of theirs, etc (this is important for the next step);

Once the heart(s) done cooking, transfer onto a plat, season with salt and pepper, and eat it while visualizing all of their happiness, etc, becoming yours and entering into you. You are stealing their happiness, power, love, joy, etc (which is why it was important for you to visualize any of their negativity being cleansed away by the rosemary. It wouldn’t do you any good to steal their shit and get the negative stuff too) so that they can never have it again.

Viola. A curse you can eat.

*Eat undercooked meat at your own risk
